Many baby boomer nurses may be facing career burnout, according to a survey by AMN Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AHS). The survey found that 46% of nurses ages 45-60 said working as a nurse had become less satisfying in the last five years, twice the number who said it had become more satisfying. In addition, 43% said they would choose another career if starting out today and only 48% would recommend nursing as a career to their children or other young people.

More than 80% cited staffing shortages as their top personal frustration.

"It is critical that we find ways to keep baby boomer nurses engaged in patient care," said Marica Faller, registered nurse and executive VP of AMN. "Without them, we will be hard pressed to meet the needs of baby boomer patients."

The survey included 1,831 nurses between the ages of 45 and 60.
