BLS reports 1,412 mass layoffs in May

There were 1,412 mass layoffs in May with 135,789 related initial claims for unemployment insurance, according to seasonally adjusted numbers reported by today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The number of mass layoffs was down 23.9% compared with the previous month and down 49.5% on a year-over-year basis.

Initial claims related to mass layoffs fell 32.4% on a month-over-month basis and was down 55.7% compared with May 2009.

The "food service contractors" industry posted the most initial claims related to mass layoffs in May at 10,887 -- not seasonally adjusted. Temporary help services came next with 9,425 -- also not seasonally adjusted.

A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.
