Average of Jobless Claims Rises by 5,500

The four-week moving average of initial unemployment claims rose to 374,750 in the week ended April 14, an increase of 5,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 369,250, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average reduces the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims fell to 386,000, down 2,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 388,000.
