Average of Jobless Claims Falls by 5,250

The four-week moving average of initial unemployment claims fell to 379,000 in the week ended May 5, a decrease of 5,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 384,250, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week moving average reduces the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims fell to 367,000, down 1,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 368,000.
