Average of Jobless Claims Edges Up

The four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance increased by 250 to a level of 371,250 in the week ended Sept. 1, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The four-week average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers. Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week decreased by 12,000 to 365,000, the first drop in new claims since the week ended Aug. 4 and also the lowest level since then.
