Average Tech Wage Rises 5%

January 23, 2013

U.S. technology salaries jumped in 2012, according to the 2013-2012 salary survey from Dice Holdings Inc. Technology professionals’ average annual wages rose more than 5 percent to $85,619 in 2012 from $81,327 in 2011.

“Employers are recognizing and adjusting to the reality of a tight market,” said Dice Chairman, President and CEO Scot Melland. “The fact is you either pay to recruit or pay to retain and these days, at least for technology teams, companies are doing both.”

And looking at the big three — big data, mobile and cloud — it appears big data is having an outsized impact on salaries, according to Dice. Salaries reported by those who regularly use Hadoop, NoSQL and Mongo DB are all above $100,000. In comparison, the average salaries for those who use technologies associated with cloud and virtualization are just under $90,000, and mobile salaries are near $80,000.

The survey took place online and included 15,049 employed technology professionals responding between Sept. 24 and Nov. 16.
