Argentina – Labour bill aims to reduce informal jobs by 2015

17 April 2014

A labour bill, sponsored by President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, aims to reduce the number of informal jobs from its current level of 33% to 28% of the total labour market, by 2015, reports The Buenos Aires Herald.

Jorge Capitanich, Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers, told reports at the Government house: “It is part of the President’s conviction to use tools to reduce labour informality.”

The move follows statements made by Argentina’s Labour Minister Carlos Tomada who questioned certain trade unions, predominately the UATRRE rural workers’ union which is run by anti-Kirchnerite Gerardo Venegas, about not fighting unregulated jobs, or so-called ‘black economy jobs’.

Earlier this week, President Kirchner announced that she was submitting a bill to Congress to address changes in the labour market and reduce the number of unregistered jobs. The Senate will start addressing the bill next week.
