Amazon to hire 80,000 US seasonal workers, others announce plans

Amazon.com Inc. (NSDQ: AMZN) will add 80,000 seasonal positions across its US network of fulfillment and sortation centers this holiday season in order to meet an increase in customer demand, the company announced. Amazon now has more than 50 fulfillment centers in the US and will have more than 15 sortation centers by the end of 2014.  

Amazon expects to convert thousands of seasonal employees into regular, full-time roles after the holidays.

“So far this year, we have converted more than 10,000 seasonal employees in the US into regular, full-time roles and we’re looking forward to converting thousands more across our growing network of fulfillment and sortation centers after this holiday season,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “We’re excited to be creating 80,000 seasonal jobs, thousands of which will lead to regular, full-time roles with benefits starting on day one and innovative programs like Career Choice for employees to further pursue their education.”

Other companies also recently announced holiday hiring plans.

UPS (NYSE: UPS) expects to hire between 90,000 and 95,000 seasonal employees, while FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) expects to add more than 50,000 seasonal positions for the upcoming peak season across its operating companies. Read more here.

Macy’s Inc. (NYSE:M) plans to hire seasonal associates for approximately 86,000 positions at its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, call centers, distribution centers and online fulfillment centers nationwide for the 2014 holiday season. The company’s 2014 season hiring plan is up about 3.6 percent from approximately 83,000 in 2013.

Walmart plans to hire 60,000 seasonal associates, nearly 10 percent more than last year.

Kohl’s Department Stores anticipates hiring more than 67,000 associates nationwide.

HoneyBaked Ham plans to hire more than 10,000 seasonal, part-time employees for its 400 stores nationwide, increasing its workforce 600 percent.

Omaha Steaks, one of the largest seasonal employers in Omaha, plans to hire more than 4,000 full and part-time temporary holiday positions that pay up to $16 per hour. Positions including office staff, logistics clerks, local truck drivers, inbound, customer care and warehouse positions.

Sports Authority will hire 3,500 temporary employees in the US for the 2014 holiday season. Sports Authority plans to convert hundreds of seasonal workers into permanent employees after the holidays.

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores will hire more than 3,000 seasonal employees, increasing its workforce 16 percent over the non-seasonal distribution center and store workforce. In recent years, roughly 42 percent of seasonal staff have been extended positions after the holidays, according to the company.
