Alberta to lead provincial economic growth in 2014

March 21, 2014

Alberta province is expected to have the fastest-growing provincial economy this year; both its exports and domestic economy are expanding rapidly, according to The Conference Board of Canada's Provincial Outlook - Winter 2014. An estimated 61,000 new jobs will be added to Alberta's economy in 2014, according to the outlook.

“The economic outlook for the rest of the provinces is mixed,” said Marie-Christine Bernard, associate director, Provincial Forecast. “Solid growth in the U.S. economy and a slightly weaker Canadian dollar will help exporters, but growth prospects in the resources sector are uneven across the country.”

Growth in Ontario is expected to break the 2 percent mark this year for the first time since 2011, according to the outlook. And economic prospects are brightening in Nova Scotia compared with last year, and to a lesser degree in Manitoba and British Columbia.

Predicted 2014 economic growth:

  • British Columbia: +2.4 percent
  • Saskatchewan: +2.1 percent
  • Manitoba: +1.8 percent
  • Ontario: +2.1 percent
  • Quebec: +2.0 percent
  • New Brunswick: +0.8 percent
  • Nova Scotia: +2.6 percent
  • Prince Edward Island: +1.2 percent
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: +0.4 percent
