Employers in Alabama will be required to use the federal E-Verify system under legislation signed into law Thursday by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, according to news reports.

E-Verify is an online system for verifying that an employee has the right to work in the U.S. The requirements are part of an overall immigration reform bill that some are calling the toughest in the nation.

The U.S. Supreme Court last month ruled in favor of an Arizona law requiring businesses to use the E-Verify system.
