ADP reports private-sector job growth by state

February 12, 2014

Private-sector employment increased on a seasonally adjusted basis in January in all nine U.S. Census Bureau divisions, but at a slower pace, according to Automatic Data Processing Inc.’s (NASD: ADP) monthly regional employment report. All 29 U.S. states tracked by the report, plus the District of Columbia, also recorded gains in January.

“U.S. regional private sector employment growth slowed in all regions in January compared to the six-month average, except the Middle Atlantic and West North Central,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, senior director of the ADP Research Institute. “At the state level, New Jersey recorded an exceptionally strong growth rate in January 2014 after a year-long slump in 2013. In contrast, New York shows the lowest growth rate of all states tracked.”

Texas, Florida, California and New Jersey posted the largest job gains during the month; Arizona recorded the highest percentage increase at 0.34 percent, followed by New Jersey and Washington State, both at 0.25 percent.
