ADP report: U.S. lost 22,000 jobs in January

February 03, 2010

The U.S. lost an estimated 22,000 private-sector nonfarm jobs in January on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to Automatic Data Processing Inc.'s (NYSE: ADP) monthly national employment report released Wednesday.

ADP's report says the service sector gained 38,000 jobs in January, but the goods-producing sector lost 60,000 jobs.

The report also lowered the estimate of jobs lost in December to 61,000 from the previously estimated number of 84,000 released last month.

Data in the ADP report is derived from an anonymous subset of roughly 500,000 U.S. business clients.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its report on jobs numbers for January on Friday.
