ADP report - U.S. loses 697,000 jobs

The U.S. lost 697,000 private-sector nonfarm jobs from January to February on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the national employment report released today by Automatic Data Processing Inc. (NYSE: ADP). The report revised up the number of jobs lost between December and January by 92,000 to 614,000.

According to the ADP report, the service sector lost 359,000 jobs between January and February, and the goods-producing sectors posted a job decline of 338,000.

Employment at medium-sized companies fell by 314,000. Employment at large firms declined by 121,000, and small companies lost 262,000 jobs.

Data in the ADP report is derived from an anonymous subset of roughly 500,000 U.S. business clients.
