ADP estimate: U.S. loses 10,000 jobs

September 01, 2010

The U.S. lost 10,000 private sector jobs in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to Automatic Data Processing Inc.'s (NYSE: ADP) monthly employment report released today. July's gain of 42,000 jobs was also revised down to 37,000.

August's decline followed six months of increases. Service sector employment rose by 30,000 in August, according to the report. However, the U.S. lost 40,000 jobs in the goods-producing sector.

ADP's report does not include the effects of federal government hiring and layoffs for the 2010 Census. The report is derived from an anonymous subset of approximately 500,000 U.S. business clients.
