ADP estimate: U.S. adds 42,000 jobs

August 04, 2010

The U.S. added an estimated 42,000 private sector jobs in July on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to Automatic Data Processing Inc.'s (NYSE: ADP) monthly employment report released today.

Employment in the service sector rose by an estimated 63,000 in July, but that was offset by a decline of 21,000 jobs in the goods-producing sector.

July's gain of 42,000 compared to an estimated increase of 19,000 in June (revised up from a previous estimate of 13,000). Job increases in the past six months have averaged 37,000.

ADP's report does not include the effects of federal hiring and layoffs for the 2010 Census. The report is derived from an anonymous subset of approximately 500,000 U.S. business clients.
