Approximately a quarter of U.S. workers, 26%, identify themselves as free agents, according to a Web survey by Kelly Services Inc. (NASD: KELYA). The survey included 900 adults and Kelly defines the term free agents as workers freelancing with or without the support of a staffing firm, including independent consultants, temporary and contract employees and entrepreneurs and business owners with or without staff.

The survey also found that 90% of free agents voluntarily sought that status, and that 28% of traditionally hired employees are likely to consider working as a free agent in the future.
