Jobless claims rise 1.4%

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment benefits rose 1.4% to 654,000 in the week ended March 7 from the previous week's revised number of 645,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Cummins Inc. announced layoffs, including temporary workers. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale AZ to hire 800 workers. The Cummins engine plant in Rocky Mount NC laid off 210 temporary workers along with 180 full-time employees, the Rocky Mount Telegram newspaper reported Wednesday....
