U.S. leading index rises

The Conference Board's U.S. leading index of economic indicators released today rose 1.0% in April, marking the first increase in seven months. The index now stands at 99.0. (2004=100).


Initial jobless claims fall 2%

The number of U.S. initial claims for unemployment benefits fell 1.9% to 631,000 in the week ended May 16 from the previous week's revised number of 643,000. The four-week moving average of claims fell 0.6% to 628,500 from the previous week's revised average of 632,000.
