First-quarter real GDP falls at 6.1%

U.S. real gross domestic product decreased at an annual rate of 6.1% in the first quarter, according to a preliminary estimate by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Reuters reported that analysts it polled had forecast GDP contracting at only 4.9%. Fourth-quarter 2008 GDP declined at a rate of 6.3%.
