Expectations for our Website - January 2010 Marketing Blog

I am sitting in my city library writing requirements for our new website. You might ask why I am in library and not in my office, well, sometimes you cannot focus in the office. The phone rings, your colleagues come in and ask questions, email keeps popping up, I can’t think. So I thought I would work from home. Then the dog barks, the mailperson comes, the phone rings, email keeps popping up, so I went to the library. I like the library it makes me want to...

All I Want for Christmas is Feedback - End of Year 2009 Marketing Blog
Well we have made it through another year. From a numerology point of view 2009 was supposed to be a really great year for me. I am not sure I ever believed in numerology, but 2009 was an okay year, not a great year.

Like many of you in marketing, we have had to do much more with less. We met most of our numbers, maybe that is where the numerology thing did work, not sure, but the marketing team is tired. I hope the holiday's provide a much needed rest for all and we can...

Brand Loyalty - October 2009 Marketing Blog
I was talking to a friend of mine on my drive to work this morning, she is a marketing executive at a micro-chip manufacturer. We were talking about the decreasing staffs in marketing departments and how, at least in Silicon Valley, if you don't have a unique branded marketing skill and you are out of work, it was time to change careers. The conversation may sound a bit harsh, but maybe it's true. We also talked about the challenge of having to lay off people or not lay off people....

Marketing Systems - September 2009 Marketing Blog
At Staffing Industry Analysts' Healthcare Summit last week, I had the opportunity to talk to one of our customers regarding marketing challenges. I realized after this conversation that it really doesn't matter what business one is in, we all have the same challenges.

We spent a fair amount of time talking about...

Marketing in a Bad Economy - August's Marketing Blog
I was in Denver last week with one of our sales people and we called on a customer and we were talking a little about their marketing mix and it made me realize that some people don't have a marketing mix, they just do one thing. So I thought I would bring that up in this month's marketing blog -- having a mix.

What is a marketing...

Getting Great Contingent Help - July's Marketing Blog
Last year I ranted on about poor temporary help, this year I want to rave. As I have talked about before, we live and breathe our own advice ' we hire and use temporary labor. Our business, like many is highly cyclical and when we are in critical demand mode, we hire temporary labor to fulfill all kinds of roles in marketing. We use temporary labor for making calls; we use temporary help for design, copywriting and editing.

Is Free, Free - June's Marketing Blog

I am writing to you from our inaugural Staffing Industry Analysts' Co-employment and Risk Forum. Some people thought we were a little crazy to introduce a new conference this year in the current economic climate. We thought, what a better time to introduce a new product. The market is tough, but it will give us a chance to understand the market better and produce the best conference we can.

From a marketing point of view, every conference...

More Marketing Resources - May's Marketing Blog

I wanted to follow up with last month's blog, since I asked people for input of other marketing resources.  Everett Reiss with Staffing Cooperative chimed in and his resources are:

Resources for Staffing Companies Marketers - April's Marketing Blog

At last month's Executive Forum, I hosted a marketing panel comprised of colleagues from CareerBuilder, B to B Magazine, Square 1 Strategy and Corestaff.  I really thought everyone on the panel had great insights and wonderful things to contribute to the audience.

Prior to the conference, we assembled a list of resources that I wanted to share with all of you.  Here are a list of books the...

On Twittering and other Musings from Executive Forum - March's Marketing Blog

The 2009 Staffing Industry Analysts' Executive Forum was a success, at least based on the survey's we received. For those of you who attended, I am sure that you attended the many sessions and were enlightened about all things staffing.

We tried a couple of different things at this year's forum. We had tracks to get people focused on various topics. We tried a special roundtable discussion segmented by...

February's Marketing Blog - Why You Should Come to Staffing Industry Analysts' 2009 Executive Forum

I Have The Blues

I know it doesn't matter much to all of you, but I have had a cold, just like many of you.  The weather is awful.  Just like many of you are experiencing, I get calls every day from friends and former colleagues looking for work.  It's exhausting.  It is hard to put a smile on my face and just get on with the day sometimes.  Then I pull out a page from that sage of...

The Economy Stinks, So Let's Close Our Eyes and Dance - January's Marketing Blog

Just in case you weren't aware, Barack Obama was inaugurated as our 44 President.  He made it clear in his speech that the economy is not well, and it will not heal itself for some time.  I suppose we didn't need the new President's inauguration speech to tell us the economy is bad.  I think we all...

Do You Send Flowers or Not - December's Marketing Blog

As the holiday season approaches one might ponder, should I send a gift to my customers and prospects or shouldn't I?  The economy is bad, is it good to show a little extravagance to get my name ahead of someone else's  or should I send something a bit more modest?  Maybe just a card?  Maybe a charitable donation?

Some time ago I sent flowers to...

Acquisitions Change Your Company - November's Marketing Blog

Earlier this month it was announced that Staffing Industry Analysts was acquired by Crain Communications.  So what happens to the Staffing Industry Analysts brand or any 'former' company's brand after the acquisitions?  The answer can be a little tricky, it depends.  Some brands stay alive, some brands become product lines, and some brands just completely disappear.  So what does one do, how does one...

October's Marketing Blog - Social Networking

We have all heard the virtues of social networking, the way to connect to customers and build customer networks.  Most social networking companies have failed to figure out how to monetize these huge networks, but free is good and we should all take advantage of free.

Staffing Industry Analysts has recently started two social networking groups on Linked In - one for our CWS Council Members and one for Staffing Industry...

September's Marketing Blog -- What do you do when the temporary person doesn't show up?

So here it is, we live and breathe our own rhetoric - we hire contingent labor!  We have a small marketing group at Staffing Industry Analysts - including me, the exalted Vice President, there are only four of us.  That means when we have conferences or new projects we hire contingent labor.  We have someone who helps us with our database and we have two people who help us with telemarketing.

But what does a manager of a small...

A Little Market Research Goes a Long Way - August's Marketing Blog

In this highly integrated world, personal time and business often overlap.  So I am going to start this month's blog off with a personal story.

I will admit that it has been 20 plus years since I have taken a college class.  But I decided to entertain myself and take a French class at my local community college.  Class started last night.  I am getting over my ego being a little bruised - I can be the parent of...

July's Marketing Blog

My topic for this month came about from reading an e-newsletter I receive - there was an article on Webinars.  I thought it was timely because we have a Webinar for our CWS Council members tomorrow and one on August 14 for our Corporate Members.  Webinars are great for a number of different reasons.  From a marketing point of view here are some reasons why your company might want to do a series of them:

  1. Webinars can be...

June's Marketing Blog

My colleague Monika and I both went to conferences related to marketing recently.  She went to a copywriting seminar and I went to a publishing conference.  I thought I would share the collective wisdom we were reminded about during the conferences.  None of this is revolutionary, just things that in the heat of the moment we all forget to do.  As always some of you are incredibly sophisticated in your marketing, so...

May's Marketing Blog

For those of you staffing CEO's or marketing executives trying to grapple with social media, blogs and other Web 2.0 components, I thought I would tell you about a conversation I had with a friend of mine.

My friend is the VP of marketing for the treasury division of a one of the country's largest banks.  The treasury division is obviously a business-to-business component of the bank.  Since I am writing this to you in a blog, our conversations...
