Executive Forum: How to treat your temporary workers

February 10, 2016

Recruiting isn’t cheap and it isn’t easy, especially given the tightening labor market and worker talent shortage. One solution is to take good care of your temporary worker pool, which helps retain your temporary workers and can encourage them to recommend their friends.

How do you take good care of your temporary workers?  For one thing, don’t call them “temporary workers,” and especially not “temps,” advises Jon Osborne, VP of strategic research at Staffing Industry Analysts. The term most favored is “contractors,” though the most optimal naming convention is actually a function of skill level.

This and other best practices for keeping contingent workers happy will be discussed during a panel at the upcoming Staffing Industry Executive Forum in Phoenix. Osborne will lead the panel, entitled “The Power of Love: How to Treat Your Temporary Workers,” which will include executives from staffing companies lauded as best places to work.

“The point of this panel is to figure out best practices in taking care of temporary workers; what do they really care about?” Osborne said. “This is not about throwing money at the problem; this is about changing the way you operate in order to make temporary workers a priority. We are going to have a very good panel on how to win this battle in the war for talent.”

The panel takes place at 3 p.m. on Feb. 23 and panelists include:

  • Dan Campbell, CEO, Hire Dynamics
  • Tammi Heaton, COO, PrideStaff Inc.
  • Pankaj Jindal, former CEO, Akraya Inc.
