Economists say end restrictions on high-skill immigrants, raise minimum wage

March 07, 2016

Lifting restrictions on high-skill immigration has wide support of economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics. Additionally, a majority of respondents believes that the federal minimum wage should either be increased or be increased with exemptions.

The NABE March 2016 Economic Policy Survey summarizes the responses of 252 NABE members.

The survey found 79% of panelists support the federal government lifting restrictions for high-skill immigrants, about the same level of support reported a year ago. Just 15% oppose the policy.

The survey also asked, “What changes should be made to the federal minimum wage?” Responses include:

  • Increased with exemptions (for teenage, short-tenured, and/or tipped workers): 27%
  • Increased: 26%
  • Abolished: 25%
  • Remained unchanged: 20%
  • Don’t know: 2%

Conducted semiannually, this survey was conducted from Feb. 10 to Feb. 17, 2016.
